Fort Wayne, IN – The Chicago Cougars Premier had a prime opportunity for redemption, returning to the PSM Icehouse for an immediate rematch against the divisional nemesis, the Fort Wayne Spacemen. Unfortunately, any hopes of correcting the course from the previous overtime loss were quickly derailed as the Spacemen steamrolled Chicago to a decisive 6-2 victory in a game that devolved into a chaotic, penalty-ridden affair.

While the Cougars managed to tighten the shot gap, allowing 46 shots compared to the 60 they surrendered last week, the defense in front of netminder Aidan Wysoglad (No. 35) was porous and undisciplined. Wysoglad, who faced the music for the full sixty minutes, simply didn't have the same supernatural magic, conceding six goals on the 46 shots fired his way.

The Chicago Cougars Wheels Fall Off Early

Fort Wayne came out swinging, dictating the pace and capitalizing on every Chicago miscue. Spacemen forward Bogdan Vysotsky (No. 89), the overtime hero from the last matchup, continued his hot streak, netting two goals in the opening frame. A goal by the Spacemen's Jace Lacey (No. 25) put the Cougars in a deep hole, but Chicago showed a flash of life in the dying seconds of the period.

With literally zero seconds left on the clock, Kaden McElroy (No. 77) stuffed a greasy goal past Spacemen goalie Gleb Rakov (No. 1) off a feed from William Minarik (No. 8). That momentum carried briefly into the second, where Ryan Luchsinger (No. 28) narrowed the gap to 3-2 at 11:47, capitalizing on a crisp Tyler Rentner (No. 5) pass. It felt like a hockey game again. That was the high-water mark.

The Spacemen delivered the demoralizing blow with a power-play tally late in the second from Antoine Bonin (No. 7), heading into the third with a 4-2 cushion.

Third Period Meltdown and the Brawl

The final frame wasn't a comeback attempt; it was a complete meltdown. Fort Wayne added two more tallies, including a back-breaker from Mikhail Gorbunov (No. 17), but the real story was the simmering frustration that finally boiled over.

With two minutes left in regulation, the whistles stopped and the gloves flew. Cougars forward Spencer Kauke (No. 25) engaged in a heavy tilt with Spacemen defender Robert Gross (No. 3), resulting in both players receiving five-minute fighting majors and, critically, Game Misconducts. It was a chaotic end to a night where the Cougars were simply outmatched and out-skated.

Maltais on the Loss: "We Took Too Many Punches"

Cougars Premier Head Coach Steve Maltais did not hide his fury over the result, clearly frustrated with the team's defensive structure and penalty issues.

“This was not pretty. We came here looking for redemption, and instead, we handed them goals on a platter. I don't mind the fire—you gotta defend your teammates—but when the score is 6-2, that fire needs to be channeled into playing smart hockey, not sitting in the box,” Maltais stated post-game. “We need to clean up the details, and we need to start firing pucks when we have the chance. We took too many punches tonight, and ultimately, you get knocked down.”

The Cougars leave Fort Wayne empty-handed and reeling from a weekend that exposed major flaws in their defensive zone coverage and discipline. The 6-2 thrashing serves as a harsh reality check: raw effort and a good goalie will not win games against top divisional rivals. With the Spacemen series behind them, Chicago must rapidly find an identity that involves structured defense and controlled aggression if they hope to climb back into the divisional hunt.
