Chicago Cougars Premier Claw Back in Two-Game Series Against Spacemen

BENSENVILLE, Ill.- In a week filled with twists, turns, and intense on-ice battles, the Chicago Cougars Premier squad and the Fort Wayne Spacemen delivered a two-game series that kept fans on the edge of their seats at The Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville, Illinois.


Fort Wayne's Dominance

Game 1 | Wednesday February 20th | The opening clash set the stage for a fierce rivalry showdown as the Fort Wayne Spacemen asserted their offensive prowess early on. Broderik Burge wasted no time, finding the back of the net just 35 seconds into the game, setting the tone for the Spacemen's dominance. Hunter Mangan and company continued their onslaught, leaving the Cougars playing catch-up throughout the match.


The Spacemen capitalized on power plays, with Oscar Axelsson and Alexis Toussaint each adding goals. The Cougars struggled to generate offense, finally breaking the shutout with a power-play goal from Gerdas Paulauskas in the third period. However, it was too little, too late, as the Spacemen secured a 7-1 victory.


Penalties played a significant role, with both teams spending considerable time in the box. The Cougars faced 29 minutes in penalties, including a game misconduct for Trey Henderson, while the Spacemen capitalized on their power-play opportunities. In the goaltending battle, William Ferland of the Spacemen stood strong, turning away 25 of 26 shots.


The loss added to the Cougars' recent struggles against the Spacemen, who lead the season series. Despite the defeat, the Cougars looked to regroup and make adjustments for the second game, aiming to salvage a win on home ice.

Game 2 | Thursday February 21st | The second game of the series proved to be a rollercoaster of emotions as the Chicago Cougars sought redemption on their home turf. The teams traded goals in a high-scoring first period, with Nikolay Ouriashev opening the scoring for the Cougars, only for the Spacemen to respond swiftly.


The Cougars turned the tide in the second period, with Gerdas Paulauskas showcasing his knack for the net with two power-play goals and ending the game with a hat-trick. Despite Fort Wayne's efforts, the Cougars took a 4-3 lead into the third period. The final frame continued the intense action, with goals from both sides, ultimately culminating in a 6-4 victory for the Cougars.

The game was not just defined by goals, but also by physical battles and penalties on both sides. Cougars' goaltender Bennett Pieters played a pivotal role, making 43 saves to secure the hard-fought win.
